from the desk of Janet Napolitano

Thursday, May 31, 2007 Dear Friends,
from the desk of Janet Napolitano

Many students and teachers across the state are looking forward to the end of another school year and the beginning of fun, travel and relaxation. For parents, summer break presents the challenge of finding ways to keep kids busy and safe.

Research suggests there is a learning dip that takes place over the summer months when youth are away from the structure of a classroom. Teachers spend about four weeks of each new school year re-teaching lessons from the previous school year as a result of summer learning loss.

That is why it is so important to keep young learners engaged in safe and stimulating activities throughout the summer break. Children and youth in quality out-of-school and after-school programs are more likely to do better in school, have greater expectations for their future and are less likely to smoke, drink alcohol and use drugs.

There are a variety of high quality summer programs available to Arizona families. Your child’s own school is a good place to start your search. Also consider programs operated through your local library, parks and recreation departments, the YMCA, Boys & Girls Clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, community colleges and universities. You can also visit www.azafterschool.org/ChoosingQualityCareGuidelines.pdf for tips on choosing a quality out-of-school program.

Another area organization, Raising Arizona Kids, provides a list of summer camps that encourage summer learning in various categories including theater, nature, arts and sports. Their Web site, www.raisingarizonakids.com, also provides a comprehensive calendar of family events.

For older youth, summer is also an opportunity for work or community service. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, youth who are engaged in community service perform better in school, have a better sense of themselves and feel more empowered to make a difference in their own lives.

I encourage adults to look into the various activities Arizona youth can participate in that provide not only a fun and safe environment, but also a place they can test their knowledge and drive.

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please contact my office at
800-253-0883 and ask to speak to Constituent Services.

Yours very truly,

Janet Napolitano

McCain Responds to Obama

McCain Responds to Obama

U.S. Senator John McCain has issued the following in response to a statement by Sen. Barack Obama:
"While Senator Obama's two years in the U.S. Senate certainly entitle him to vote against funding our troops, my service and experience combined with conversations with military leaders on the ground in Iraq lead me to believe that we must give this new strategy a chance to succeed because the consequences of failure would be catastrophic to our nation's security.

"By the way, Senator Obama, it's a 'flak' jacket, not a 'flack' jacket."

John McCain On "The Sean Hannity Show"

John McCain On "The Sean Hannity Show"

John McCain, On Our Broken Borders: "I am prepared to lead and I want to do the hard things, not the easy things. And it is very easy to kill legislation. It's always easy to come out against something. But I owe it to America and our national security requirements to do something to change the status quo. The status quo is broken borders and 12 million people who are in this country illegally, six of whom just decided they wanted to kill people at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Three had crossed our border illegally; three were here on expired visas. It's clearly a national security issue, and my commitment is to the future of the country, and my children and grandchildren." - Listen to John McCain on "The Sean Hannity Show"

John McCain, On The Consequences Of Inaction: "I do the hard things. The fact is that you can either do one of two things. You can round up and deport 12 million people, which, no one yet that I know of knows how you do that, or you put them in some kind of probationary status which they do not have citizenship, they don't have a green card, they've got to go back to the country of origin, they have to pay a 5,000 dollar fine, and they have to get in behind everybody else which is at least eight years and could be as many as 15 years after they could even qualify for to be even green card or citizenship now. ...And if you think that just, if enforcing existing laws is the way out, then again, we respectfully disagree. There are 12 million people who are not going to turn themselves in. Some of them are bad people. And some of them want to do bad things in this country, as those people who wanted to attack Fort Dix, and I don't think they're willingly going to line up for deportation." - Listen to John McCain on "The Sean Hannity Show"

Mccain update

John McCain started the week leading up to Memorial Day in the Sooner State, where he addressed Oklahoma legislators on the need to implement government reforms that will transform and make transparent the way Washington does business. Throughout the week, John McCain addressed the need to enact comprehensive immigration reform that will secure our borders and uphold our values. He believes fixing our broken borders is a national security priority that demands immediate action, and he took his case directly to conservative bloggers and talk radio hosts. Finally, the Senator and Mrs. McCain are very much looking forward to visiting Charlotte, NC, where he will serve as honorary starter for this Sunday's Coca-Cola 600. Bill Clinton's UGLY BUDDY

BILL'S UGLY BUDDY: PAYMENTS FROM SCANDAL-TIED FIRM

By DICK MORRIS & EILEEN MCGANN

This is a more detailed version of a column that was published in The New York Post on May 24, 2007.

Since he left office in 2001, former president Bill Clinton has been paid by InfoUSA, an Omaha, Nebraska company that has been identified as a key provider of specially designed databases that are sold to criminals who use the detailed information to defraud the unsuspecting elderly.

Because Senate financial disclosure rules do not require Hillary Clinton to reveal exactly how much -- or for what -- the company has paid her husband over the past five years, we don’t know all the details. But we do know this: former presidents – especially Bill Clinton – don’t come cheap. And, just months after he left the presidency, Bill Clinton was paid $200,000 for a speech given to InfoUSA in Omaha. Since then, he has been paid an undisclosed amount each year, listed only as “more than $1000” for ‘non-employee compensation” on Senator Clinton’s Senate financial disclosure form.

According to the The New York Times, InfoUSA compiled and sold lists that disclosed the names of elderly men and women who would be likely to respond to unscrupulous scams. The lists left no doubt about the vulnerability of the elderly targets. The Times reported, for example, that InfoUSA advertised lists of “Elderly Opportunity Seekers,” 3.3 million older people “looking for ways to make money,” and “Suffering Seniors,” 4.7 million people with cancer or Alzheimer’s disease. “Oldies but Goodies” contained 500,000 gamblers over 55 years old, for 8.5 cents apiece. One list said: “These people are gullible. They want to believe that their luck can change.”

InfoUSA sold lists to companies that were under investigation or closed down by courts because of their criminal activity. The company’s internal emails show that employees were aware that the investigation for elderly fraud involved their customers, but sold the lists anyway.

The Times profiled one unfortunate 92 year old man who entered a sweepstake sponsored by InfoUSA. The information that he innocently provided was then sold to the predator marketers. After responding to their telemarketing calls seeking financial information, his entire life savings was stolen from his bank account at Wachovia Bank. These practices, using lists supplied by InfoUSA were repeated all over the country.

Last week, Hillary Clinton sought and obtained an extension of time to file her presidential candidate financial disclosure statement. Unlike the information required of Senators, this filing requires her to list not just the sources of Bill’s income but exactly how much they paid him. While Senator Clinton offered no reason for the postponement, one cannot help wondering if a desire to conceal InfoUSA’s payments to her husband while the company is under fire.

The relationship between Bill Clinton and Vinod “Vin” Gupta, the CEO and Chairman of InfoUSA is both long-standing and deep. A frequent Clinton donor, he has stayed in the Lincoln Bedroom, admitted to donating $1,000,000 to the Clinton Library and told the press that he’d consider an additional donation. Again, since the Clintons refuse to disclose who donated money to the library, we don’t know the total that he actually gave. In late 1999, Gupta gave $2,000,000 for Hillary Clinton’s Millennium New Year’s Eve bash. (They party cost $16 million and was closed to the press!)

The links between Gupta and the Clintons are extensive:

• Gutpa raised over $200,000 for Hillary’s Senate campaigns and contributed thousands to the DNC and Democratic House and Senate campaigns.

• InfoUSA was one of the sponsors of the Aspen Festival of Ideas last summer where Bill and Hillary Clinton both spoke.

• Gupta built the Bill Clinton Science & Technology Center and the Hillary Clinton Mass Communications Center in his hometown of Rampur, India

• Bill and Gutpa traveled to India together

• Gupta reportedly paid for a golf outing for Bill at a legendary Scottish course

• InfoUSA appointed Terry McAuliffe, the Clinton’s longtime money man to the Board of Directors of its subsidiary company videoyellowpagesusa.com

• Clinton appointed Gupta to the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees only a few days before he left office

• Clinton also nominated Gupta as Consul General of Bermuda and U.S. Ambassador to Fiji, but Gupta was never confirmed

• Gupta’s company co-sponsored the 2006 Clinton Global Initiative

• Gupta sent a $7000 treadmill to Chappaqua days after the Clintons left the White House. After the NY Post disclosed the gift, the Clintons returned the gift.

Gupta’s generosity to the Clintons is only matched by his generosity to himself. InfoUSA has lately been attacked by some of its shareholders, particularly by the Greenwich, Connecticut company Cardinal Capital that went after Conrad Black. Lord Black is now on trial in Chicago for corporate fraud.

Cardinal Capital objected to Gupta’s purchase of a $600,000 skybox at the University of Nebraska, his family’s charges of $13.5 million in private jet charges, and $2.5 million for the long term lease of a yacht – all with corporate funds.

In addition to his 2001 visit to the company’s headquarters, Bill Clinton was back there to speak at a conference on privacy issues in September 2006. Senator Clinton’s disclosure statement for that period has not been publicly released, so we don’t know how much he was paid.

This connection between the Clintons and InfoUSA only underscores the necessity of full disclosure of income sources and amounts by all the presidential candidates and the release of their income tax returns, a step Mrs. Clinton has, thus far, refused to take.

A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM CHAIRMAN RANDY PULLEN

A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM CHAIRMAN RANDY PULLEN

Dear Friends,

This past week has seen some of the most tumultuous political activity in Arizona and around our nation in recent memory with the introduction in Congress of bipartisan legislation aimed at reforming our nation’s immigration laws. Here in Arizona, where cross-border traffic is among the heaviest, this issue is especially important. It is safe to say that every resident of our state has, in some way, been affected by illegal immigration.

From drugs to gangs to the trafficking of people – and even to the threat of terrorism – Arizona voters of all partisan and political persuasions have very strong opinions about this issue. What unites a vast majority of voters in our state – Republicans, Democrats and independents alike – is our desire for border security first and foremost. That is the message we received from voters in all fifteen counties, young and old, rich and poor, across every demographic and from every walk of life..

When this compromise legislation, the Border Security and Immigration Reform Act of 2007 was announced late last week, Arizona voters were quick to react, as did grassroots-minded Republicans in states across the nation. Here at Arizona Republican Party HQ, the calls we received were very lopsided: Over 1,600 callers opposed the legislation; while only 8 supported it.

For the first 48 hours, Republicans came in to re-register as independents. Another tore his voter card up in our office and discarded the pieces on our floor. Another simply left his Republican registration cards on our desk and said he wouldn’t need them any longer.

Far too often in politics, we fail to give our grassroots their due voice. We call on them each election year to work for our party and our candidates, and then they are all too often ignored until the next election cycle. That’s not the type of Republican party we want in Arizona. We understand our voters and our Precinct Committeemen and our volunteers and our local parties are the foundation of our coming victories.

In the past 48 hours, since we engaged on this issue, by stating the Arizona Republic Party does not support the Border Security and Immigration Reform Act of 2007, our phone calls, emails and faxes at the office have remained just as firmly in opposition to this legislation, but they now include thank-you notes and contributions from individuals who haven’t donated to the party in years. We’ve even had people come into HQ to re-register as Republican after leaving the party just days ago because they felt their voices were not only heard but amplified.

But conversely, I’m very concerned about the direction that some criticism has taken, most especially toward U.S. Senator Jon Kyl, who has served our state and our nation with great dedication for two decades now. I was forwarded an email today containing a letter from Congressman Trent Franks who addressed this issue so eloquently that I would like to quote directly from his letter:

“I understand that some people may disagree with Senator Kyl's position on immigration reform. However, I believe that the vitriolic rhetoric recently used by some to condemn Jon Kyl is highly inappropriate and shameful. I urge anyone who may disagree with Senator Kyl to do so respectfully and to refrain from attacking the personal integrity of this honorable man,” wrote Congressman Franks, according to the email.

Over the course of his distinguished career, Senator Kyl has earned a lifetime “A” rating from the National Rifle Association. He has frequently earned near-perfect or even 100 percent ratings from such organizations as the American Conservative Union, Americans for Tax Reform, National Right to Life, National Federation of Independent Business, US Chamber of Commerce, Americans for Prosperity, and the list goes on.

Senator Kyl is considered one of the ten most effective US Senators in Congress today. From protecting our paychecks to protecting our families to protecting our nation, Jon Kyl has been Arizona and America’s most dedicated patriot for decades. He has fought our tough battles time and again, and tomorrow he will be there fighting just as hard with just as much pride. More than once I’ve heard Senator Kyl referred to as a statesman, not a politician.

As a party, we must remain committed to our principles each and every day. We must engage the Democrat majority in Congress each and every day for the benefit of our nation, our state and our party. But in our vigilance in defense of our liberty and our rights, we must not allow ourselves to deteriorate into the politics of hate or personal destruction which all-too-frequently characterize the Democrats’ attacks on our candidates at election-time.

We are at an important time here in Arizona when a reenergized grassroots can play a tremendous role in our hopes and aspirations for victory next year. To the more than one million men and women who make up the Arizona Republican Party, I am still humbled each day to serve you as chairman. Together, we can – and will – accomplish great things.

Sincerely,

RANDY

McCain to visit Boston next month

McCain to visit Boston next month for campaign fundraiser

BOSTON Sen. John McCain will hold a fundraiser next month in Massachusetts, home state of his presidential rival Mitt Romney.

The Arizona Republican will gather June 18 with supporters at The Taj hotel, the former Ritz-Carlton overlooking the Public Garden, McCain's campaign confirmed.

Organizers include Jane Swift, the state's former acting governor, and Jean Inman, former chairwoman of the Massachusetts Republican Party.

Meanwhile, former Gov. Paul Cellucci is helping organize another fundraiser next month on behalf of a third GOP presidential candidate, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. The date and location have yet to be announced, although Cellucci previously confirmed the event.

The three Republicans who combined to hold the governor's office from 1991 to 2003 have split in the race for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination. Former Gov. William F. Weld is backing Romney, who was Massachusetts governor between 2003 and 2007, while Cellucci is supporting Giuliani and Swift has endorsed McCain.

"immigration bill fundamentally flawed" Gov. Bill Richardson

In opposing immigration bill, Richardson caught in debate

immigration bill fundamentally flawed

WASHINGTON - Of all the candidates running for president,
none has more weathered the crosscurrents of the immigration
battle than Gov. Bill Richardson, the New Mexico Democrat.

Richardson, whose mother is Mexican, is the governor of a border
state with the highest percentage of Latino immigrants in the country.
He has been entangled in the issue at home and a player in the ongoing
struggle in Washington about rewriting the nation's immigration laws.
He is the first Latino to seek the Democratic presidential nomination.

Richardson initially said he would support the immigration compromise
announced earlier this week. But on Wednesday, he said that after
reading it in detail, he had decided to oppose it, saying the measure
placed too great a burden on immigrants - tearing apart families that
wanted to settle in the United States, creating a permanent tier of
second-class immigrant workers, and funding a border fence that
Richardson had long opposed.

"This is fundamentally flawed in its current form, and I would
oppose it," he said. "We need bipartisanship, but we also need
legislation that is compassionate. I'm not sure this is."
